St. Georgen am Längsee

The local area around St. Georgen am Längsee includes several Carinthian magnets for visitors, and above all one of the most famous castles in Austria, Hochosterwitz Castle.

With its 14 preserved castle gates, it reigns majestically high above the valley plain and is visible from far away. The full variety of the castle includes an armoury, a collection of weapons and pictures from the Renaissance period, the opportunity of becoming more familiar with medieval crafts, and a varied cultural programme with concerts, exhibitions and festivals.

But it is not just Hochosterwitz Castle that is simply waiting to be discovered, but also many other cultural monuments such as further castles, ruined castles, churches and chapels. The ruined Taggenbrunn Castle should be highlighted in particular, because new life has been breathed into it as the new centre of Carinthia’s largest vineyard.

Leisure tips: taking a dip in the warm Lake Längsee, a round on the 18-hole golf course, and the view of the wonderful scenery from the abbey. The municipality also has 86 kilometres of signposted hiking trails.
