Advent in Carinthia. The best kind of anticipation

Immerse yourself in the tranquil world of Carinthian Advent.

Atmospheric Christmas markets delight with Advent concerts, authentic handicrafts and living Christmas customs. Be captivated by the magic and treat yourself to a few days off before Christmas in Austria’s southernmost province.

An atmosphere to warm the heart: The snow sparkles in the sea of Advent lights, at the Christmas markets in the towns, by the lakes and high up in the mountains. The air is filled with the aroma of incense, baked apples and biscuits fresh from the oven. At tastefully designed stands and in little huts, craftsmen show off their traditional skills, engage in interesting conversations and let everyday life slip from the mind. Strolling around, time passes in a flash - trying something delicious here, buying a little present for your loved ones there, listening to the atmospheric sounds of the musicians and singers. And the stress of Christmas? You certainly won’t find it here.

Christmas wonderland by the lake and in the towns

While Klagenfurt is the perfect place for a mulled wine opening with a fairytale atmosphere and one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the Alps-Adriatic region, Advent in Velden is a feel-good place for angels young and old and enchants the shores of Lake Wörthersee with glittering stars and a floating Advent wreath. Those who prefer things more contemplative should pay a visit to the “Stiller Advent” event in Pörtschach. A small chalet village directly on the lakeside promenade. On the other side of Lake Wörthersee, on the southern shore, the romantic church market on the Maria Wörth peninsula awaits you this Advent. The Pyramidenkogel lookout tower lures you into Advent above the clouds. The landmark of the Wörthersee region, 100 metres tall and visible for miles around, illuminates the sky in a special way. At the foot of the tower, visitors will find an atmospheric Advent market with exceptional craftsmen and musical accompaniment. The boats of the Wörthersee Schifffahrt shipping company, decked out in pre-Christmas lights, bring you to all these places on Lake Wörthersee.

Villach presents itself as a Christmas portal for the eyes, ears and palate: Concerts, attractions for young and old, sparkling Old Town lanes and an Advent market with many regional producers, make the Christmas magic in the “City in the Light” simply perfect.

As a special kind of Advent experience, the Katschberger Advent Path, arranged in themed barns, focuses on the original Christmas. On a winter's walk, far away from the kitsch and commerce, each of the lovingly designed stops is dedicated to a different Christmas theme.

Between the snow-covered peaks of the Nockberge mountains, in the World Cup and spa town of Bad Kleinkirchheim, a mountain adventure awaits you with selected arts and crafts, Advent bakeries, horse-drawn carriage rides, a children’s programme and an alpine spa Advent. It's no wonder that guests and locals love getting in the mood here for the most beautiful time of the year.

Winter time in Carinthia means a time for tradition, peace and meditation. Christmas in Carinthia also means to smell the aroma of freshly-baked cookies and green pines, to walk through the Christmas market in one's warmest clothing and to warm yourself up with mulled wine.

The specialities in the traditional calendar include the custom of knocking on doors and asking for refreshments in the Gegend Valley, and Christmas trees are plunged into several lakes. A particularly nice spot for contemplation and forgetting about everyday life is Kap 4613 on Lake Millstätter See, where a floating Christmas terrace serves as a backdrop.

During the so-called "Perchtenlauf," the atmosphere is not so romantic and quiet. The "Perchtenlauf" always takes place in the beginning of December in different villages in all Carinthian regions (e.g. 1.12.2018 Klagenfurt, 30.11.2018 Villach, 25.11.2018 Velden) during which men disguise themselves with fearful devil's masks and run screaming among the crowd under the sound of cow bells.
