Italy is only a stone’s throw away, and you can already easily feel the southern attitude to life here. When you go hiking or skiing on the Nassfeld, you can make a detour across the border – for a meal or simply to drink a cappuccino.
Spending summer in the region means walking through glorious natural surroundings, fantastic long-distance panoramic views and culinary highlights. But there are also unforgettable tours here for mountain bikers, especially thanks to the new trail. Children will love the “BergWasser” aqua trail, where they can explore nature and test their courage in the rock labyrinth. Botanists and flower lovers will be delighted by the wulfenia. This blue-flowered Ice Age plant is strictly protected, and the other subspecies grow only in the Himalayas and Albania.
The Nassfeld is Carinthia’s largest and most modern ski region, and offers everything a winter sports lover could desire, on the basis that “there is nothing that doesn’t exist”. There is also an extensive programme of thrilling events for visitors, such as “Schlag das Ass” – the longest ski race in the world.
The Lesach Valley and the Gail Valley are the first Slow Food Travel Region in the world. With their motto “make time for the product, and treat nature and her resources with care”, they focus on ancient knowledge and the “craft of food”. The people here bake bread, make cheese, produce bacon and collect honey, and holidaymakers can actively join in. A culinary speciality in Hermagor is the Gail Valley bacon, and there is even an annual festival devoted to this.
