Bad Eisenkappel/Železna Kapla

Bad Eisenkappel is a climate protection municipality, and is also Austria’s southernmost health resort and climatic spa. But it is famous above all for one thing: the Obir dripstone caves, which are unique in Europe.

You can find out all about the unique cave world and its animal inhabitants on an 800-metres-long subterranean adventure trail, with living dripstones, coupled with a fascinating multimedia show.

You can also plunge into the peculiarities of nature in the Geopark Karawanken: the new information centre is right on the main square. From here amongst other things you can go on guided tours into the Trögerner Klamm gorge (“hiking on the sea bed”), up to the Petzen or Topitza, or to the Drau reservoir water meadows.

But Bad Eisenkappel is also one of the sport climbing regions of Southern Carinthia.

In winter there is a particular tradition in Bad Eisenkappel: the carrying of little churches, known as “Ante Pante”, which is celebrated on the evening before Candlemas (1 February) to commemorate the flood disaster in 1180. Small churches made of paper or wood, attached to a stick and lit with a candle, are carried through the town in a procession of lights and finally placed in the Vellachbach stream.
