Family camping Austria: things to do with kids

With sparkling bathing lakes, endless flower-filled meadows, children’s playgrounds and pure freedom, camping with children in Carinthia is a special experience for the whole family. All amidst the most picturesque mountain and lake landscape.

In the sunny south of Austria, you can look forward to warm summer days of water sports and water fun. The mild climate means the lakes often reach water temperatures of up to 27 degrees in summer. Splash around in the shallows or swim out to the diving platform, have fun on the inflatables course, or zip down the waterslide. There is so much watery fun to be had on Lake Wörthersee, Lake Millstatt, Lake Ossiach or Lake Faak.

Visit the Affenberg Landskron to see 150 Japanese macaques living in beautiful surroundings or the famous Happ reptile zoo in Klagenfurt. The Rosegg zoo is another tip for young animal lovers – they can cuddle dwarf rabbits and pet mini pigs. Your children's eyes will light up at the Klopeiner See forest adventure world or the medieval fortress of Hochosterwitz Castle, which is straight out of a fairytale. Ascend the world’s highest wooden viewing tower for 360-degree views at the Pyramidenkogel.

Alongside all the fun activities you would expect from a camping holiday by the lake or in the mountains, Carinthia offers some more unique activities. Try llama trekking, via ferrata, canyoning, or a Segway tour. Find out all about mining the beautiful red garnet stone at Radenthein, where you can even hack your own stones our of the mountainside. Or whizz down over a mile of mountainside on the Nocky Flitzer alpine coaster at Turracher Hohe.

You don’t need to worry about the odd rainy day while family camping in Austria. Soak in the hot thermal pools of Kärnten Therme in Villach or in Bad Kleinkirchheim. There are also indoor climbing walls and trampoline parks, and fascinating museums in Klagenfurt and Villach – how about the Museum of Mushrooms?

All this to discover and more on family camping holidays in Carinthia - the natural paradise for family camping! Austria also invites you with the Kärnten Card, your ticket to over 100 fantastic excursions and activities in Carinthia.
