Grafenstein lies twelve kilometres to the east of the provincial capital Klagenfurt, directly at the foot of the richly forested, hilly Sattnitz landscape.
Its historic jewels include amongst other things the 17th century Grafenstein Castle, which is privately owned by the Orsini-Rosenberg family, or Saager Castle, in which the sculptor and painter Giselbert Hoke found a centre for his creative work. The Romanesque church of Saint Anna in Saager once inspired the Carinthian impressionist landscape painter Markus Pernhart, who eternalised the church building on a hill in one of his pictures. Grafenstein is a good starting point for journeys of discovery in romantic natural surroundings – whether you are hiking, cycling or fly fishing.
