To-do-list summer 2018

1. Experience the taste of childhood on a canoe trip.

Kanutour erleben

A particularly beautiful backdrop for this is the wilderness landscape of the rockslide area along the Gail river. The journey is the destination - and after an exciting canoe trip, refreshments await you at Lisi's alpine pasture in the form of homemade breads, cider and apple juice.

This is just one example of the "Magic Moments 2018" offer - unique, guided adventure programmes through selected Carinthian natural idylls.

2. SUPn or Yoga?

Stand-up-Paddling

Every now and then you have to see the world with new eyes! Or in other words: Carinthia's warm bathing lakes are much too good for swimming and splashing around in. How about a stand-up paddle tour on Lake Wörther?

From the water, the environment looks completely different. If you prefer a more relaxed approach, you will love Lake Wörther as a yoga hotspot.

3. Bivouac or star-rated hotel?

No matter if you're staying in a 5-star-hotel or holidaying on a farm or campsite. No wishes are left unfulfilled when it comes to the choice of accommodation.

Amongst the most unusual are a tree house in Althofen, bivouacs on Lake Millstatt, a sunset suite on Lake Wörther, terraced houses on Lake Weissensee and sleeping casks in Hermagor. Read more here

4. Visiting a goddess.

Göttin der Zeit - Burg Taggenbrunn

The goddess of time resides at the Taggenbrunn estate in St. Veit an der Glan. The work of art by Andre Heller watches over Carinthia's largest winery and creates a special connection to the profession of the owner Alfred Riedl, whose watch label Jacques Lemans is successfully represented in 120 countries.

The visit of the goddess could also be an excuse to try out the new heuriger, add the Carinthian delicacies as well as the house wine and Jacques Paagnier. More information: www.taggenbrunn.at

5. Hiking through 3 countries.

You don't have to hike all 43 stages of the Alpe Adria Trail from the glacier of the Grossglockner to the Upper Adriatic (750 km) - you could just start small.

The Alpe Adria Trail booking centre helps you to organise your trip (accommodation, luggage transport, restaurant tips) as this long-distance hiking trail through Carinthia, Italy and Slovenia focuses on enjoyment. Information: http://alpe-adria-trail.com/en/

6. Cool down while glacier trekking on the Pasterze.

Gletschertrekking auf der Pasterze

With crampons, waist harness and rope it goes through the rugged ice landscape at the foot of Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner.

A tour guided by a state-certified mountain guide (June to September), which leaves no one cold. Detailed information: www.berglust.at/magische-momente

7. Bake your own bread.

In Carinthia, the world's first Slow Food travel destination, regional, seasonal and traditional cuisine is of particular importance. For this reason, locals and guests are invited to look over the shoulders of dedicated food craftsmen or - if you feel like it - lend a hand yourself.

The spectrum ranges from bread baking courses and hay-milk processing to beer brewing and herb tasting. A detailed overview of the workshops can be found here.

8. Journey to the Middles Ages.

Burgbau Friesach

For some years now, a castle has been being built in Friesach according to medieval models - and therefore without electricity and without the aid of modern equipment. On a walk through the grounds you can see what stonemasons, carpenters, carters, basket trusses or roofers can do.

Haste is not an issue here. The project with its towers, palace, circular walls and chapel is planned to take 35 years. Info: www.burgbau.at

9. Celebrate feasts as they fall.

Villacher Kirchtag

Villacher Kirchtag

In hardly any other province of Austria is the joy of life expressed as much as in Carinthia. Whoever wants to be in the middle of it all, will find plenty of choice. In addition to large popular festivals such as the Villacher Kirchtag, there are a number of culinary events that should definitely be taken note of. Such as the fish festival in Feld am See or the village and bread festival in Lesachtal.

Tip: SeeEssSpiele (LakeFoodGames) on Lake Wörther, KüchenKult (KitchenCult) in Villach and Aufwort' n (Food's Up) on Lake Weissensee. Further information here.

10. After 35 kilometres simply return your (rental) bike and carry on.

Drauradweg bei Villach

Do you fancy a bike tour but don't have your own bike? That's no problem on the Drau cycle path! The 5-star cycle path offers cyclists a perfect infrastructure with bike rental and bicycle-friendly businesses.

Tip: From Villach via Rosegg (Rosegg Zoo) and Feistritz im Rosental (Wahaha Leisure Centre) to the gunsmith town of Ferlach with its bee museum in Kirschentheuer and gunsmith museum. After an eventful tour, return the bike and take the train back to the starting point. Information: http://www.drauradweg.com

11. Test the new mountain bike route in Bad Kleinkirchheim from August.

Nockbike Bad Kleinkirchheim

It's just one example of the attractive trails that can be found right across Carinthia. Mountain bikers in Austria's southernmost province have no less than 3000 legal mountain bike kilometres at their disposal. What is special about the route in Bad Kleinkirchheim?

Stretching over 13 kilometres in length when complete (summer 2019), the route will be even longer than the world's longest Flow Country Trail on the Petzen, which is also located in Carinthia. Information about mountain biking in Carinthia

12. Slow motion instead of high speed.

Slow Trail beim Ossiacher See

Last year, the first Slow Trail was opened in Carinthia and is made up of short hiking trails close to the lake with special natural sites and lake panoramas.

Six more are to be created during the year. The one at Bleistätter Moor on Lake Ossiach a good start. Info

13. Play golf in two countries on one day.

Golfen am Millstätter See

Info hier

14. Catch dinner yourself.

Fischen am Afritzer See

What we mean here is fishing rather than hunting. The Fischerhof Glinzner on Lake Afritz,

the Zedleggerhof near St. Veit an der Glan or the Falkerthaus in St. Oswald (Tel. 0043 676 5724090) offer possibilities for doing this.

15. Travel through the mountains with llamas

Lamatrekking am Katschberg

- without going to South America. On the Katschberg, you can hike with Flocke, Monti and Mosquito on a leash from June to September.

The tour lasts three to four hours and has a very calming and balancing effect on people. By the way, llamas do NOT spit at humans but only at intrusive llamas. Register here.

Region Villach
Affenberg in Landskron

Tip: Visit 100 sights free of charge:

Museums, mountain railways, adventure pools, boat rides, scenic roads, leisure and adventure facilities. The Kärnten Card makes it possible.

It is valid from 8 April to 26 October 2018 and costs €39 (adults) or €19 (children) per week.
